NOTE: THIS PROGRAM HAS NOW CONCLUDED WITH THE PUBLICATION OF "WIN THE RIGHT WAY." PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR DETAILS ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND THE BOOK.

The Center for Campaign Leadership is a nonpartisan, campaign training and research organization located at the University of California at Berkeley and is funded by a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts.

The mission of CCL is twofold: to teach practical campaign skills to young people interested in public service; and to improve the campaign behavior of candidates and their advisors in a way that encourages greater confidence and participation in American elections and government.

CCL Campaign Training seminars are designed to:

  • stimulate the development of professional behavior and expertise by identifying outstanding ethical experts, programs, policies and practices

  • bring ethical issues confronting political consultants into focus and effectively present models of ethical behavior

  • deliver real-life training and instruction from practicing political consultants

Win the Right Way:
How to Run Effective Local Campaigns in California

Candidates don’t have to sling mud to win. This state-of-the-art guide combines the latest research on voter attitudes from UC Berkeley’s Center for Campaign Leadership with advice from leading campaign strategists on how to run clean, honest, effective campaigns for public office in California. Rather than echo the conventional wisdom that negative campaigning works, this guide shows candidates how to plan a campaign, build an effective organization, de-velop and deliver a clear and compelling message, and mobilize voters on elec-tion day—all in a way that promotes public trust in both the candidates and the offices they seek.

CCL is also conducting original research on political campaigns and the political consulting industry, which draws on both empirical and normative scholarship. In addition to making significant contributions to scholarly literature on campaign ethics CCL’s research findings inform the curriculum of the campaign training seminars.

John McCain, U.S. Senator

“Center for Campaign Leadership has built an ethical framework for teaching campaign politics to young Americans, one that transcends party or ideologies and unites young political aspirants in a common goal-building ethical leadership and improving campaign politics. If we do not clean up campaign politics all of us will continue to work under a cloud of suspicion, where the public always assumes that we serve our own interests before the country's and the ends always justify the means."
